Due to the fact that deposits of precious diamonds, rubies, sapphires, garnets, amethysts, rock crystal, the only emerald deposit in Russia were discovered in the Urals, jewelry production is one of the most significant Ural crafts.
Despite the fact that large-scale deposits were discovered here, it was forbidden to officially process precious stones and metals on the Urals until the end of the 19th century, which is why the Ural craftsmen worked for a long time “outlaw”, fulfilling individual capital and European orders. In 1901, state law lifted all restrictions associated with the processing of stone and precious metals. It was then that they started talking about the Ural jewelry school. Jewelry artels, associations and joint-stock companies began to be actively created.
From the middle of the 20th century, Ural craftsmen began to work in a unique filigree technique, the essence of which is to weave ornaments from the finest metal threads and painstaking soldering of elements, modifying it: the balls become larger, the wires are thicker, torsion leaves or significantly decreases. By the beginning of the 90s, it began to be used much less frequently.
The peculiarity of the Ural jewelry school is that artists manage to find and manifest, emphasize the natural beauty of the stone.
At present, talented individual craftsmen and entrepreneurs of the Sverdlovsk region are engaged in jewelry.
