On October 5th, 2018 Sverdlovsk region won the prestigious award “Golden Apple”. This international award in the field of tourism was awarded to the region as Russian leader in the field of business and event tourism. The award ceremony was held in Ekaterinburg, in the column hall of the Sevastyanov’s House. The governor of the Sverdlovsk region Evgeny Kuyvashev received the award.
“Golden Apple” is the equivalent of “Oscar” in tourism field; it was established in 1970 by the World Association of travel journalists and writers FIJET. Every year, this award is given to a country, city or person for special achievements in the development and promotion of tourism. A delegation of FIJET leaders from Tunisia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Turkey, Morocco, Egypt, and Russia arrived in the Urals to attend the award ceremony. FIJET President Tijani Haddad headed the delegation.
The award pedestal is made of natural marble and the apple itself is gilded.
“I am pleased to present the award to the Sverdlovsk region, which is developing so dynamically that it is becoming one of the leaders of Russian tourism,” said Tijani Haddad. He explained that the winner was the region where tourism is growing and tourism infrastructure is developing. “You have a rich historical heritage that you preserve, you live in a smiling city, you have something to offer to tourists” said Mr. Haddad.
The head of the region, Evgeny Kuyvashev, sincerely thanked Mr. Haddad and all the representatives of the FIJET for the high appreciation of the tourist infrastructure and abilities of our region.
“The Golden Apple Award is honorable for the Sverdlovsk Region. Over the years, such world tourist destinations as Luxor, Brno, Sharm El Sheikh, Antalya, and Krakow were awarded. Today, the Sverdlovsk region is at the same level as these tourist gems. Our task is to comply with the new status and more actively develop the tourism potential of the region,” the governor noted.
The head of the region thanked all those who work in the field of inbound tourism in the middle Urals. “Your patriotism and hard work allowed the region to receive this award. We are only at the beginning of the road and we still have a lot to do,” said Evgeny Kuyvashev.
It is important to note that this is the second visit of the FIJET delegation to the Middle Urals; in July, ten representatives of this organization visited the Sverdlovsk region with a working trip. The Ministry of Investment and Development and the Tourism Development Center of the Sverdlovsk Region organized the information tour. The decision to award this prize to our region was influenced by the results of a journalists’ visit. During the visit, our guests announced their intention to tell the foreign media about the tourist and cultural potential of the Sverdlovsk region. Following the visit, many publications were made about the Sverdlovsk region both in print media and online sources and in social networks.
To recall the Sverdlovsk region entered the top ten fastest tourism-developing districts according to the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation in 2016, ranked third in the rating of event tourism and second in business tourism among Russian regions in 2017. Tourist projects of the Sverdlovsk region are annual finalists of the national contest “Russian Event Award”.
The recognition by the international federation FIJET of the extensive tourist opportunities of the Sverdlovsk region is especially important to note now, when Ekaterinburg participates in the competition for the right to host the World EXPO2025.
